Forget traditional apples and school buses, this back-to-school bulletin board idea really “pops”! Display designer and a featured contributor of BoardsGalore.com, Rosemary Carnes, inspired her Sunday school students to have a great school year with bright colors, a catchy tag line, and salty treats! Here’s how you can make your very own popcorn bulletin board display.

Popcorn Display

  • Background: Red fadeless bulletin board paper.
  • Title: “Have A Poppin’ Good School Year!”
  • Border: White bulletin board trimmer or other theater-themed trimmer (i.e. film strips, popcorn, etc.). You might also consider stringing actual popcorn onto fishing wire to create a garland.
  • Decorations: 1) The Popcorn Bags: Party stores carry popcorn bags, but you can also make your own (see template). 2) The Popcorn. Pop a fresh bag of non-buttered popcorn. You’ll want to fill your popcorn bags about 3/4 of the way with cotton balls and then glue your popcorn in. Follow this pattern: add a layer of popcorn, secure with spray adhesive, add a layer of popcorn, secure with spray adhesive, etc. until you’ve reached the desired effect (i.e. the popcorn is nicely mounded at the top of the bag with a few pieces ‘overflowing’). To prevent the popcorn from collecting dust, you may wish to spray the finished product with a flat, clear enamel paint. 3) The Details. Add a few stray pieces of stray popcorn around the board, script an inspiring educational quote, and you’ll have a welcome board that “pops”!
